I was born in West Berlin at 21:47 on November 9th, 1989 — the exact moment the Wall fell.
My mother told me later that the nurse rushed in shouting 'Die Mauer ist offen!' and everyone in the maternity ward started crying. Strangers held my mother's hand.
I'm 36 now, working in Berlin as a journalist. Every year on my birthday I walk from Bornholmer Straße to Brandenburger Tor — about 7 km. I count the steps because my mother used to say each one is a year someone didn't get to live free.
