Born at 8:51 AM on September 11, 2001, in NYU Langone hospital — Manhattan, exactly 55 minutes before the first plane hit the North Tower.
My mum said the doctors finished cutting the cord, looked up at the TV, and the room went silent. Nobody spoke for ten minutes. They handed me to her wrapped in a blue blanket while smoke poured into the window from downtown.
Every year on my birthday, the city stops to mourn. I've never had a 'normal' birthday party — no one wants to celebrate on 9/11. I learned to be okay with that.
This year I'm 24. I'm finally throwing a party. My mum is flying in. The cake says: 'Born into the worst day. Made it into a good life.'
